about

After a period of constant coming and going, touring and recording in support of other artists, Abby Gundersen suddenly found herself with 5 months at home. “I realized that in only supporting others I was starting to lose a sense of purpose. I was putting my own dreams off.” Then, alone in her apartment with a violin, a cello and a keyboard, roots began to take hold. Time Moves Quickly started to take shape.

As a record of few words, Time Moves Quickly is a departure from the folk-inspired music common to Seattle. It could have just as easily emerged from Iceland, where composers like Olafur Arnalds create instrumental music that is restrained and sublime. “One thing I’ve learned while playing with my brother is the importance of leaving room in a song, and how powerful and emotional that sort of space in music can be.”

“Farewell Summer”, the record’s second track, was actually conceived as a conversation between violin and cello. We can sense expressions of sadness and hope even though we can’t comprehend the words--as though listening in on a mournful conversation in a language we don’t understand. As the voices wander off, we are left with the ambiance of crystal wine glasses and a crackling recording of Robert Lowell’s “The Public Garden”. “Remember summer?” it asks. “We splashed… we drowned in Eden, while Jehovah’s grass-green lyre was rustling about us.”

“As a child I was always immersed in the moment. The older I get, the more I am looking to the future, and the faster time moves past me. I want this record to bring people to a place where they can simply stop, think, and listen.”

Time Moves Quickly is Abby Gundersen’s reflection on the nostalgia of the past, the unstoppable push of the future, and the never-ending struggle to remain in the present.
